Here I Am, Lord

The last time I attended a Catholic funeral, it was a horrible, horrible experience.

I’m not going to re-hash the entire experience here today, but let’s just say that it was the one event, the one catalyst that caused my heart to harden for many, many, years.

Today was different, however.

We’ve met a lot of good people in the past few months, and one of those is the Director of Youth Ministry at our church. She is one of the most inspirational people I know and she has worked wonders with the youth of our church.

We were saddened to learn that her mother had passed away this past week, and decided we needed to attend her funeral to show our support and our respect to her family. I thought I was going to be nervous about attending her funeral, especially because my last experience at a Catholic funeral had been so catastrophic. I was wrong.

The funeral was one of the most beautiful I have attended, and I walked away with a sense of peace I have not felt since before that first funeral oh so long ago.

As the funeral ended, they played my favorite hymn, “Here I Am, Lord”.

I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard My people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin, My hand will save.

I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear My light to them? Whom shall I send?

Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord? I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have born my peoples pain.
I have wept for love of them, They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone, Give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak My word to them, Whom shall I send?

Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord? I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them, My hand will save
Finest bread I will provide, Till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give My life to them, Whom shall I send?

Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord? I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart.
