Barack Obama & Socialism

How much do you know about Barack Obama? Do you feel you know all there is to know about him or are there questions left unanswered? Well, one of those unanswered questions has been answered. Barack Obama was a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Now, now, before you leave in a huff, take a look at the proof. The documentation in question is not posted on some “right-wing” conservative site, it’s sitting on the website for the Chicago Democratic Socialists of America website. It’s not hearsay, it’s not some sort of “swift-boat” attack. Barack Obama was a member of the Chicago New Party which was affiliation of the DSA. It’s the truth, and you need to hear it before you vote.

First of all, let’s review the definition of socialism,

  1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.
  2. procedure or practice in accordance with this theory.
  3. the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles.

Some examples of socialist countries are China, Cuba, North Korea, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Sri Lanka, Syria, and Venezuela. Some famous socialists are Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Fidel Castro, and Muammar al-Gaddafi.

The website Politically Drunk on Power did the footwork to uncover all of the information. Information that is sitting in plain site on the DSA website and in the Internet archive for the New Party website waiting for someone to find it. Waiting for someone to look for it.

Barack Obama was an active member of the New Party, and more importantly, the Democratic Socialists of America, during the 1990’s. His early campaigns were endorsed and backed by the DSA. This wasn’t some unknown group that endorsed him or donated to his campaign. He actively attended and participated in meetings, he sought their endorsement, and after a review by the “New Party” political committee, he was offered membership and he signed a contract agreeing to have a “visible and active relationship” with the New Party.

After he won his State Senate race, he encouraged members of the New Party to join his task forces on voter education and voter registration. That sounds pretty active to me.

According to Wikipedia,

Socialists mainly share the belief that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth into a small section of society who control capital, and creates an unequal society. All socialists advocate the creation of an egalitarian society, in which wealth and power are distributed more evenly, although there is considerable disagreement among socialists over how, and to what extent this could be achieved.

Curt, over at Flopping Aces, has done more digging on the issue and provides more evidence of Mr. Obama’s involvement with the party.

Candidate Barack Obama participated as a panelist at the DSA-sponsored Town Meeting on February 25, 1996, entitled “Employment and Survival in Urban America”.

There is no doubt about Mr. Obama’s intentions. He signed their contract and agreed to their principles. The mission statement of the Chicago Democratic Socialists of America website states,

Our mission is to establish democratic socialism as a political force in the United States and around the world by training and mobilizing socialist activists to participate in a vibrant and diverse socialist organization at both the local and the national level.

DSA both educates the public about democratic socialist values and policies and builds progressive coalitions to win victories that move the U.S. and the world toward social democracy.

In the near term, democratic socialists struggle for reforms that shift power and resources away from corporate elites and put them in the hands of ordinary citizens.

In the long term, democratic socialists fight for a world in which all people share equally in the governing of the economic, political and cultural institutions and relationships that shape their lives.

If you still have any doubt about the Democratic Socialists of America, you might want to read about how they were formed.

Formed in 1983 during the Cold War by merging splinter factions of the Socialist movement, DSA brought together what it calls “former Socialists and Communists, former old leftists and new leftists, and many who had never been leftists at all.” In its early years, DSA supported the Soviet-backed nuclear freeze program that would have consolidated Soviet nuclear superiority in Europe – under the banner of promoting “peace.”

Or better yet, their position after September 11th.

In the wake of 9/11, DSA characterized the terror attacks as acts of retaliation for American-perpetrated global injustices. “We live in a world,” said DSA, “organized so that the greatest benefits go to a small fraction of the world’s population while the vast majority experiences injustice, poverty, and often hopelessness. Only by eliminating the political, social, and economic conditions that lead people to these small extremist groups can we be truly secure.”

My question is, why haven’t we heard about Barack Obama’s involvement with the DSA sooner? Why wasn’t this information brought to light before now? The mainstream media is known for being tenacious when they want to find something, and it’s clear they had no intention of looking for these documents let alone finding them.

By now, you have heard a lot about both political candidates. Like most candidates before them they rely on “attack ads” to get the job done. It’s not about selling themselves as much as it is convincing you to vote against the other guy.

It’s about time we got some real information with real documentation to back it up. I’m sure the Obama campaign will work to bury this story as soon as possible by trying to turn attention back on John McCain and some “guilt by association” tactic that plays well in the media. The media will appreciate it since they dropped the ball on this one.

Texas Fred said it best, however,

Is that guilt by association, YOU BETCHA. But there is an old Yiddish saying, ” you lie down with dogs, you are going to get fleas.”

This is more than guilt by association, this is about Barack Obama and his political views, and if he’s elected, it’s about the future of the United States of America.
